The book of James is all about being a Christian. Not just saying your a Christian, but acting like one. James wrote this book as a reminder for us Christians to practice our faith. But the first thing that comes to mind when I think of the book of James is trials.
Pretty much every Christian has James 1:2-3 memorized when it comes to trials and persevering. I have been doing a Bible Study this past week on the book of James and to be honest, I would always skip over or skim that section of James. I mean, I’m not battling with cancer, my family’s not in major debt, and I have everything I need. There is no reason why a person like me should take the time to read about having joy while going through trials. I have no major trials. But what I have learned doing this Bible Study is that I still need James 1 when it comes to the little things. I need to persevere through fights and arguments with my friends, struggling with bad grades, and any other trial that comes my way. It may not be as big as cancer, but James 1 still applys to me.
Maybe you’re the same way. You don’t have any major trials that you are facing, but you are having to persevere through the little things. Which ever side you are, James 1:12 can be a great encouragement for those of us who are having to persevere.
“Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.”
The first thing that catches my eye while reading this verse is how James calls the man “blessed”. If a man is going under trials, how can he be blessed? My Bible study puts it this way, “Because James understood that even in the pain, God’s plan and God’s purposes prevail.”
Another cool thing about this verse is that he didn’t say “if he has stood the test”, he uses the word “when”. What an awesome assurance! Also, we will receive the crown of life. Not “might” or “possibly”… we will. It is a guarantee. Why? Because God promised. And as you know, God never breaks his promises.
So next time you are going through a trial, big or small, remember James 1:12. By persevering, you will receive a crown of life from God himself.
